Using a serial device on a computer without serial ports

By: King Pong

Did you recently purchase a new laptop only to find out that it didn't come with a serial port? You're not alone - most laptop manufacturers no longer offer serial ports because the technology is becoming more outdated. For people who do not require serial ports this is no problem - you will save a significant amount of space on your laptop by not having legacy ports (serial or parallel).

There are many devices, however, that require serial ports. These include some GPS units, PDA's, medical devices, CNC routers and more. The answer to connecting your serial devices to a newer laptop is a USB to Serial Adapter since virtually all newer laptops include USB ports (also known as Universal Serial Bus).

A USB to Serial Adapter is a quick and easy way to add a serial port to your computer. These adapters do require a driver installation, but installation is usually quick and painless provided you have a CD-ROM drive available (the driver file comes installed on a CD-ROM).

There are many different chipsets available for the USB to Serial but Prolific is generally preferred because it is inexpensive, yet compatible with almost every operating system/platform.

There are also multi-port USB to Serial Adapters available for those who may need to run multiple serial devices in a computing environment. This is common in the banking industry where sixteen or more serial devices may be running simutaneously.
