Everybody knows that a lot of gamblers visit Las Vegas. What a lot of people don't know is that a lot of non-gamblers like to visit Sin City, too. It draws crowds to conferences, shows, awards ceremonies and more. Recently I was asked by a friend why it is so expensive to go to Vegas, however, and stay in a hotel without a casino attached. There are very few of these available, but you can find them. The problem with them is that they are much more expensive. Regardless of your feelings of gambling you are probably better off staying in casino. If you are a gambler the reasons are obvious - you will have easy access to tons of gambling choices. If you are a non-gambler, however, you can prove that the house doesn't always win. Casinos think (correctly, in most cases) that if they can get you to stay in their attached hotel that there is a good chance you will gamble in their casino. For this reason they steeply discount room prices with the intention of making up the difference (and then some) at the tables. In most cases this works perfectly for them. In some cases, however, they are taken for a ride by people like me and you. If we go to Las Vegas and stay in casinos without gambling, we stand to come out on top. The casinos don't take this into account because the number of people who actually do this is so minimal that it is not a concern - they are looking at their return on investment as a total, not breaking up this subset of people that don't gamble. It would be very difficult to somehow price discriminate between the two, also (although they could by charging a normal rate for the room and giving away free gambling tokens - a lot of casinos have tried this but it has been unsuccessful since when booking hotel rooms very few people take into account how much money they are going to spend at the tables). So be smart and remember that you can prove the old adage false - the house doesn't ALWAYS win.
